Cross Country Finish Line

Lessons in Life

This week my son wraps up his Senior season of Cross Country. This is his third season. He played football as a Freshman and joined Cross Country as a Sophomore.

As an avid non-runner, I really didn’t understand the sport at first. But as I watched my son in the sport, I began to understand it is about mental toughness and being the best version of yourself. Each season, each match, each practice he tried to extend himself. It is definitely, a metaphor of life.

I am very proud of my son. He has learned endurance and fortitude, plus made several friends along the way.

Taking those Pictures

Interestingly enough, it took a while to learn how to photograph the events.

  1. Of course, the running pictures are the initial focus. Usually, isolating them is the main challenge.
    1. Separate the subject from the field of runners
    2. Clean background can be a challenge
  2. However, I found the after race pictures often told the story of the event.
    1. Teammates cheering, consoling.
    2. Sweaty kids giving mom a hug
    3. Pure exhaustion
  3. Know the course.
    1. Coming out of the woods
    2. Running thru a stream
    3. Jumping hay bales
