The Little NAS That Could

Introduction

/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/nas.jpgTechnology, gadgets, gizmos, etc. usually don’t age well. I once had a Rio 600 MP3 player that had a whopping 32MB. However, my Synology 1513+ easily is one of the best investments that I ever made. It’s been running nearly continuously for 7 years.

I bought it with extra memory and no hard drives. I have added various drives along the way and even bought the expansion unit 2 years ago. It’s has been nothing short of rock solid.

Cellular Timeline

Looking back, it’s amazing how cellular technology has changed over the years.

Enter the Pager

I started out getting a pager. Not sure why I needed one but it was all of the rage. It was great…it had a new feed that would deliver sound byte stories in:

  • National News
  • Sports
  • Entertainment

Also, each pager had an email address. I would set up my Elm account to auto-forward all of my email to my pager. I don’t recall really ever using the numeric only paging.

Rusty the Dog

A special call out from the Salute to Veterans is Rusty the Dog: a legend in our family.

From Bill Your:

Rusty was a dog that my dad picked up while he was in service. Rusty was part Chow. Rusty also was a beer drunk. Dad would leave Rusty to his own devices and he often made the rounds of the officers clubs where the men bought him beers. So how Rusty managed to make it home in a loaded condition and then had to be let out constantly after his drinking binge. Rusty was sent to live with my grandparents when Dad was slated to go overseas because, although he was allowed to take Rusty, he could not bring him back into this country. My grandfather spent some time detoxing Rusty after he came to live on Pershing Dr. The dog had beer withdrawal.

Salute to Veterans

In honor of those who have served, I have included pictures of my two grandfathers, men of the greatest generation.

  • My paternal grandfather retired from the (Army) Airforce as a Major. He’s the one with the dog 🙂
  • My maternal grandfather served in the Army. I loved the color picture of him in Europe.

Daylight Savings Checkup and Time Zones

Bi-annual ritual

My son was born at 12:55 AM in the fall before the time change. As my wife was in labor, someone went around to each room and adjusted the analog clock back one hour…well ahead of the time change. Even thought he was born at 12:55 AM, the clock said 11:55 PM. Confusing, right? Well, at least we didn’t have to worry about which 1:XX AM he was actually born at (the first or the second?).

Annual Christmas Card

Like most families, we annually sent out Christmas cards to a our friends and family. Over the years, it has taken on many shapes and formats. Yet, increasingly, it has become a labor of love.

The Early Years

When we first got married, these were very generic and what was available “off of the shelf.” In fact, I pretty sure our first Christmas card as a married couple was more to announce our new address. Soon, it began to include a wallet-sized picture of our children (we always had a surplus of those courtesy of Sears Portrait Studios or The Picture People).

Return to CrashPlan

After five and half long years of using Carbonite, I have switched over my cloud-based to CrashPlan. This has been something that has been lingering for awhile but a recent hardware event forced the issue.

In another post, I describe my backup strategy. Even though, my strategy had multiple layers, it still failed a little bit. My main data drive on my main computer got corrupted. No big deal, I thought. It is under warranty, and I will RMA the old and get a new one. After that, I will just pull down the last good image from WHS. However, it was that smooth.

Time for Change-Daylight Savings Time Again

As an IT guy, Daylight Savings Time is a royal pain. I understand the genesis of it but I think it has long since outlived its usefulness. And when the government changed the weekends of the change (both fall and spring), I believe it caused a lot more actual issues than Y2K. Our minivan clock was set by satellite and was always off by an hour each fall and spring without intervention.

Proxy Unsupported Printers

I have an older LaserJet 1000 that HP has sunsetted. It is our workhorse at home for everyday printing. It is a host based printer…meaning it needs to be attached a computer to spool and print. We have its USB cable plugged into our Windows Home Server as a shared network device. My wife got a new 64bit PC, Windows7. I was shocked when I realized that she couldn’t connect. No 64 bit drivers are available.
